To successfully forge items in Baldur's Gate 3's Adamantine Forge, you must first defeat Grym the Adamantine Golem, a fearsome and practically invulnerable construct. Grym is one of the toughest bosses in Act One, with a significant health pool and an array of immunities and resistances that make it challenging to take down. However, certain tactics can make this fight much easier, even on the tough new Honor Mode difficulty.
You will encounter Grym at the end of your quest to find and use the Adamantine Forge to craft Adamantine Gear. This quest involves exploring the Grymforge and collecting gear molds and Mithral Ore for the forging process. There are six different Adamantine Forge items; however, due to limited resources, you can only craft two. Grym has to be defeated before you can collect any items.

How To Defeat Grym, The Adamantine Golem
Lead The Golem To Lava
When fighting Grym, a strong party composition in BG3 with multiple companions who are either highly mobile or capable of tanking damage is essential, and ranged weapons are a must-have. Grym is immune to damage unless it has the Superheated debuff, which is applied whenever it's in contact with lava. Have a party member always stand by the Lava Valve, allowing you to flood the area with lava to maintain the debuff.
Grym is an extremely tough opponent due to the construct's 300 Hit Points and abnormally high Strength and Constitution scores. Yet, as a construct, Grym is weak against forced Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws, so try to use magic that targets those skills. While your party may not have extremely powerful spells in Act 1, you will be surprised to see some still useful in this fight.
Even with Superheated, Grym is either immune or resistant to all damage types, with a single vulnerability to Bludgeoning damage. This leaves it vulnerable to blunt weapons, such as a strong Warhammer or similar weapon wielded by your party. However, this also makes the golem weak against the Forge Hammer, a huge hydraulic press in the center of the boss arena where you fight this construct.
Grym Superheated Damage Type Resistances & Immunities | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Slashing | Piercing | Bludgeoning | Acid | Thunder | Necrotic | Fire | Lightning | Cold | Psychic | Poison | Radiant | Force |
Resistant | Resistant | Vulnerable | Resistant | Resistant | Immune | Immune | Immune | Resistant | Immune | Immune | Immune | Resistant |
The easiest way to defeat Grym in Baldur's Gate 3 is to lure it to the Crucible platform in the middle before triggering the Forge Hammer by interacting with the Forge Lever. The Forge Hammer will strike the Crucible, dealing immense Bludgeoning damage and knocking Grym Prone. This simple trick makes defeating Grym much easier, and a few strikes from the Forge Hammer will be enough to kill Grym.
Grym automatically targets the last party member who attacked it. Use this to lure Grym over to the Crucible by attacking it. You can use a spell like Mage Hand to activate the Forge Lever from afar with a spellcaster when Grym is in position.
However, this tactic prevents you from obtaining A Grym Fate, an achievement awarded for beating Grym without the Forge Hammer. To earn this achievement, attack Grym with blunt weapons such as war hammers, flails, mauls, and maces to exploit its vulnerability to Bludgeoning damage. Defeating Grym with conventional weapons is possible if you keep its attention on your tanks and away from your spellcasters and support characters.
How To Defeat Grym In Honor Mode
Rely On Unconventional Solutions
Honor Mode makes Baldur's Gate 3 much harder by restricting you to a single save with party permadeath and giving bosses new Legendary Actions. Grym gains the Adamantine Reverberation Legendary Action, granting it 10 temporary HP and doubling its speed when struck. Removing the temporary HP triggers a shockwave of Thunder damage with knockback.
The knockback can blast companions into the lava, where they suffer 10d6 fire damage, potentially killing them instantly. Combined with Grym's increased movement, defeating Grym with conventional weapons becomes practically impossible. Instead, using the Forge Hammer or relying on other niche strategies is highly recommended, like those seen in the above video by YouTube creator ZalZeera.
One popular niche strategy for defeating Grym is known colloquially as Owlbear from the Top Rope. This involves having a Druid Wild Shape into an Owlbear and then being Enlarged or consuming an Elixir of the Colossus . The Druid can then use Crushing Flight to jump down on Grym from the stairs above the platform. The Owlbear's increased weight raises the damage of Crushing Flight so that the jump will deal an instant knockout blow, even in Honor Mode.
To shield your party, consider using the Silence spell. Anyone inside a Silence field cannot cast verbal spells but is immune to Thunder damage.
Rewards For Defeating Grym
Start Crafting Powerful Armor For Your Party
Taking down Grym gives you access to the Adamantine Forge, where you can build two pieces of powerful weapons or armor from six available molds. This can include one of these options:
- Adamantine Mace
- Adamantine Longsword
- Adamantine Scale Mail
- Adamantine Scimitar
- Adamantine Shield
- Adamantine Splint Armour
On Honor Mode or any other difficulty, you also gain the unique Grymskull Helm magic item, which grants any character who wears it fire resistance. Like all Adamantine gear, this item also prevents a character from being hit by critical attacks, greatly reducing the potential damage your enemies can inflict. This item can be useful for any party member with armor proficiency, like a Fighter or Paladin.
After managing to beat Grym in Baldur's Gate 3, you can consider most of the Adamantine Forge dungeon cleared, but keep your party ready for other dangers that may lurk around every corner.
